A collaborative photographic series that explores the way humans take from, and change, the environment for urban development.

Extraction is a series made by a group of third year Manchester Metropolitan University students in collaboration with Action for Conservation. The collection looks into the idea that urban development relies on the uprooting and repurposing of materials from the earth.

When placed alongside each other, the photographs become composite; they are remodelled to resemble another form, to serve a new purpose.

We should be conscious of materiality and the life cycle of matter. Where does everything come from? Where will it go?
